And a word to whoever's doing the port:
  PLEASE do an integrated GEM version!  The bewildering array of
swiches on the DOS version of ARJ is enough to make me tear my
hair out every time I try to use it!  Geez, it's powerful, but
geez, it's also REALLY confusing!

  Otherwise I may have to take a few weeks out of my vacation
next summer and do an integrated version myself :)

  Seriously, it would be swell to have something along the lines
of StuffIt, based on ARJ, for TOS.  Heck, I'd prolly even pay
money for it.

        have not yet set up a character cell news reader
        on my machine as I will soon be taking another assignment.

Atari ST, mono monitor, and 24 pin multi-font printer.
1 meg RAM, HD interface (home built), DSDD floppy, SM124 monochrome monitor
(super sharp).  The printer is the NEC P2200.
The computer has an external industrial strength power supply (Boschert)
because the original wimp supply died.
Software inlcudes Atari Wordperfect word processor, personal Pascal 2.0
compiler,
microsoft (not sold by microsoft but by the same people) flight simulator,
balance of power game by chris crawford, lots of public domain stuff
and a hard disk backup utility (commercial).
This is an excellent MIDI computer.  Has not seen use in a year and a third
as I have bought a Mac.

$550.  With a 40 meg HD $750.  (HD needs a case but hooks to the
same power supply as the computer -- the power supply could probably
run a lot of ataris and HD -- 25 amps at 5 volts, 5 amps at 12 or some such
rating, I was told it had a worth of $100 by itself, very stable and requires
almost no load).

Vision V1.2 for the mac.  Excellent pro-quality sequencer and very popular.
Can be upgraded to V1.3 for $29.  I will transfer the studio name to you also
that it was registered under so that you will have full Opcode support.
Sam Ash wants $370 (at least they did a few months ago).

Subject: Creator/Notator 3.1 Update

For all interested Creator/Notator users, I have just recieved my copy of
the Creator 3.1 update from C-Lab.  The update costs $35; I believe the
program now sells for $325 new.

First off, there's a new graphical arrange mode, using a grid that you can
zoom in and out of (like Hyper Edit).  You can use it as the old arrange
mode, or utilizing new cut & paste functions.

Also, when using 32 tracks/pattern, you now have the option to view all 32
at the same time (with all parameters, of course).

There is also a slew of new very detailed and flexible note-processing
functions, allowing such things as global shifts over the entire
arrangement.  Since I'm still finding new things to do with the old
transform and re-mapping pages, I haven't really gotten to this stuff yet.

Also added is control for compatible Fostex tape machines.

For Notator users, notation output now supports Calamus and Pagestream
formats.

Also included, naturally, is a new manual.

So far, I've found the 32-track display and the graphic Arrange grid
particularly useful, since I use about 45 MIDI channels spread over
hundreds of tracks.  It's now a lot easier to get a grip on overlapping
patterns and patterns that start and end in strange places (fractions of
beats, etc.)

C-Lab's distribution # is [phone].  I'd like to hear other users'
impressions of the update.

   At our institute we bought a TT with 8 Mb and Spectre GCR.
Unfortunately Spectre doesn't work with the TT's internal hard disk and
is therefore practically unusable.

Has anybody seen an ST version of ISPELL, the known unix spelling checker? I
could get the sources, but I did not succeed in porting it to the ST. Are there
any alternatives (except spelling all right in the first place)? What is your
favourite spelling checker, folks???

Looking forward to all your reactions; I'll summarize them and send them to
the net.

gosh it sure looks nice with just a plain terminal window with no

I have my 33mhz 68030 and 8 megs of RAM ready for the board!  All I need
to get is a 68882 and the board itself....

BTW, do you happen to know what speed of RAM I should have?  And, does the
68030 automatically use the 68882 or do the programs have to be written
for it?

This would really suck if you couldn't put one of those nice SST
boards in a MEGA STE...

Really suck indeed.  Most people are dumping thier MEGA ST's for STE's.

I wonder if Mr. Small has taken this into consideration.

I hope so!!  I would love to buy one of those boards at the November
show in Chicago.

Programs would have to be recompiled to use the '882...  Though I think
some floating point libraries are set up to use the '881/'882 if it's
there, otherwise they do (slow) emulation.  That's hersay though... ;-)

I think your RAM should be 80ns or faster...  'could be wrong though.
Dave Small found some 60ns 1M SIMMs for about $41 US a peice in a MacUser
or something like that (Mac magazine...).  As with the CPU, the faster
the better...

This is simply not true. Nobody I know has upgraded their Mega to a Mega STe.
In fact, everyone I know looked at the Mega STe and laughed (have you ever
seen, better yet used the keyboard, what a piece of junk!). Everyone I know,
including myself, with the original Mega's is wonderfully happy with them and
just won't consider "upgrading". AdSpeed is better than the Mega STe 16mhz
68000 settup too, seeing as it will switch, hands-off, at the execution of any
program you set it to, and switch back when you quit. The local store has a
Mega STe they have not been able to sell for 6 months, but still gets TONS of
requests for the original Megas. Whenever they do get a Mega in, it sells the
same day, meanwhile the Mega STe sits there..... Also, the compatibility seems
to be extremely poor. Virtually none of the demos, and a couple of applications
crashed and burned in the Mega STe, even with the cache turned off and running
at 8mhz. All these same programs work fine with AdSpeed. Lastly, ever seen how
the hard drive is held in a Mega STe? GLUE, can you believe it! Take the little
case on the right side of the machine off and just look at how Atari installed
the hard drive, this is why the hard drive is so damn loud (it sounds like it
is destroying itself anytime you do drive access). Wait, one last thing, the
hard drive light is not built into the machine. Ever noticed that the hard
drive light is difficult to see because it is so dim? This is because the
"light" on the Mega STe is really just a hole with a little piece of plastic in
it. It relies on the light built into the drive, which just sits in there
behind the little piece of plastic...now that's engineering for you.

Really though, my biggest gripe is the keyboard, I've literally never seen a
keyboard on a modern computer this poor (it makes a Mac Plus keyboard look
good). Anyone that has a Mega STe should know that you can purchase the
original MEGA keyboards from BEST electronics, and they will work fine...

That sounds slick indeed.  For the price of this board and a used Mega, you
could have a real screamer that costs less than a TT.  You gotta love
Dave Small.

Does this ring a bell somewhere? If so, it is probably because this is
not the first time I am boring you with silly questions about Lisp.
Needless to say, I didn't get any response last time. I am desperately
looking for a powerful Lisp dialect as similar to Common Lisp as possible
which will run on my TT. David Betz's Xlisp is the best thing I've heard
of so far, but it causes trouble sometimes. I know that Clisp will not run
at all. Any suggestions, anyone? Thanks.

But definitively NOT the best adress for RELIABLE compression programs,
especially not for zoo. Write to Gereon Steffens ([e-mail]), he did
a fine TC port of Zoo 2.1 (including ARGV), and most people I know now
use HIS version.
